Two benefits from one course
Texas courts can let you take defensive driving to have a minor moving violation dismissed, keeping it off your record. Separately, finishing an approved course can earn an insurance discount. You can claim both from the same course, but people often forget the second one, so send your certificate to your insurer as well as the court.
Ticket dismissal rules
- Once every 12 months.
- Minor moving violations only. Tickets for 25 mph or more over the limit, construction-zone offenses and serious violations such as passing a school bus don’t qualify.
- You need a valid Texas license, not a commercial license.
- The court must approve the course before you take it.
What the discount is worth
On a $2,000 premium, a 10% cut is about $200 a year, or $600 over three years, against an online course price of around $26 plus a small fee. Texas premiums are among the higher ones in the country, so the course often pays for itself in the first month.
Young and new drivers
Texas requires driver education for everyone under 25. Teens take a full course, and adults 18 to 24 take a shorter adult course. Courses must be approved by TDLR.

How to do it, step by step
- If you were ticketed, ask the court for permission to take defensive driving before your court date.
- Choose a TDLR-licensed course (the provider number is shown on approved courses).
- Complete the 6 hours online; progress saves as you go.
- Send the certificate to the court by its deadline, along with any driving record it asks for.
- Send a copy to your insurer and ask for the defensive driving discount.
Is it worth it?
On a $2,000 Texas premium, a 10% discount is worth about $200 a year, and up to $600 over three years. Dismissing a ticket can be worth even more, because a moving violation can raise your rate at renewal for years. The course costs around $26 plus a small fee.
