How the 55+ discount works
The discount is set in state law, so every insurer must give at least 5% to eligible drivers. Some give more. It lasts three years from completion, then you take the shorter refresher course to renew. Online, the mature driver and refresher courses each cost around $28, so a 5% cut on a $1,400 premium (about $70 a year, $210 over three years) covers the course several times over.
Drivers under 55
Pennsylvania doesn’t require a discount for younger drivers, but some insurers offer one for a voluntary driver improvement course. Call your insurer first and ask whether it gives a discount and which courses it accepts.
Teen drivers
Driver’s ed isn’t compulsory in Pennsylvania, but it is useful: PennDOT’s graduated licensing rules let junior license holders move to a full license sooner if they have completed driver education and kept a clean record. Ask your insurer about a driver training discount too.

How to do it, step by step
- Check you are 55 or over and ask your insurer to confirm it accepts PennDOT-approved online courses.
- Enroll in the Mature Driver Improvement course (or the refresher if you are renewing).
- Complete it online at your own pace; there is no final exam.
- Download your certificate and send it to your insurer.
- Note the date: you’ll need the 4-hour refresher in three years.
Is it worth it?
At 5% on a $1,400 premium you save about $70 a year, or $210 over three years, for a course of around $28. If your insurer gives more than the minimum, the saving grows. Over a decade of renewals, it adds up to several hundred dollars.
