Mature driver discount (55+)
Under Florida Statute 627.0652, insurers must give a discount to drivers 55 and older who complete an approved accident prevention course. The amount varies by company, and the discount lasts three years. A renewal course then extends it for another three. Florida has a large retired population and premiums above the national average, so this is one of the easiest savings for older drivers in the state.
Basic driver improvement for tickets
- 4 hours, approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
- For one eligible violation, it keeps points off your record, which helps keep your premium from rising.
- Once every 12 months and five times in a lifetime.
- Tell the court within 30 days of the ticket’s due date that you’re electing the course. You still pay the ticket and court fees.
Which course do you need?
If you’re 55 or over with no ticket, the mature driver course is the one for a lower premium. If you’ve just been ticketed, basic driver improvement protects your record. They are different courses with different certificates.

How to do it, step by step
- Decide which course you need: mature driver (55+, for the discount) or basic driver improvement (for a ticket).
- For a ticket, tell the clerk of court within 30 days of the due date that you are electing BDI, and pay the ticket and fees.
- Take the FLHSMV-approved course online at your own pace.
- Pass the open-book exam and download your certificate.
- For the 55+ discount, send the certificate to your insurer; set a reminder to renew in three years.
Is it worth it?
If your insurer gives 10% on a $2,000 premium, the 55+ discount is worth about $200 a year, or $600 over three years, for a course of about $34. Even at 3% it pays for itself in the first year. For a ticket, avoiding points is usually worth much more than the $24 course.
