Why traffic school is worth more than a discount
A single moving violation can raise a California premium for three years or more. If a court lets you attend traffic school, the ticket is masked from the record insurers usually see. The fine and a court administrative fee (about $52 to $64, set by the court) still apply, but on a typical premium the saving over three years is usually far bigger than those costs.
Who can use traffic school
- You need a valid California license (non-commercial is the usual case).
- The ticket must be a minor moving violation, not alcohol-related, not an equipment fault and not 25 mph or more over the limit.
- At least 18 months must have passed since your last traffic school, counted from the violation date.
- The court sets your deadline, usually 30 to 90 days.
Drivers 55 and over
California requires insurers to offer a discount to drivers 55 and over who finish an approved mature driver course. The law doesn’t fix the amount, so ask your insurer what it gives and which courses it accepts before you enroll.
Teen drivers
Teens can start driver’s education at 15½: 30 hours online or in a classroom, then 6 hours with a professional instructor and 50 hours of supervised practice (10 at night). Expect a big premium jump when a teen joins your policy, and ask about good-student and driver training discounts.

How to do it, step by step
- Check your courtesy notice or the court website to confirm traffic school is offered for your ticket.
- Pay the fine and the court’s administrative fee, and tell the court you are choosing traffic school.
- Pick a DMV-licensed course; online courses let you set your own pace.
- Pass the open-book final test. The provider reports completion to the court and DMV electronically.
- After 1–2 weeks, check with the court that your completion was received.
Is it worth it?
Say a ticket would add 20% to a $2,200 premium. That’s about $440 a year, and a ticket usually affects pricing for three years, so roughly $1,300 in total. Traffic school costs about $25 online plus the court fee of around $52–$64. Even if your insurer would add less, avoiding the surcharge usually costs far less than paying it.
